The SlateGuard is the only polycarbonate snow guard built for slate roofs. A SnoBlox Deuce is factory-mounted on a heavy 16-gauge 304 stainless steel strap that hooks under the slate or shingle and catches the existing roofing nail — no adhesive, no drilling through a finished slate roof. Clear is the standard; stock Deuce colours are available made to order for roofs where a tinted face blends better.

Why SlateGuard works on slate, shingle and composite tile roofs

  • Hooks on the roof nail — six slots in the strap engage the existing fastener under the course above; no new holes in a slate roof
  • Pre-assembled — rolled tabs plus a stainless screw and washer lock the Deuce to the strap; nothing to put together on the roof
  • Retrofit or new construction — slide it under an existing course, or screw it to the deck as the roof goes on
  • Non-corrosive for life — 304 stainless strap and 100% virgin polycarbonate guard, warranted for the life of the roof
  • Nearly invisible — the clear Deuce face casts no shadow, and the strap disappears under the slate

How to install SlateGuard on a slate or shingle roof

  • Retrofit: slide the strap up under the course above until the guard sits where you want it, then pull it down so a slot catches the existing nail or screw.
  • New roof: fasten the strap to a solid deck below as the roofing goes on rather than relying on short roofing nails — recommended on asphalt shingle.
  • Position the guard on the lower portion of the course, face forward, in front of the snow.
  • Stagger guards across the entire roof plane per the Canada Snow Guards installation guide. Never isolate guards over a doorway, vent, chimney or HVAC unit.
  • Submittals: SlateGuard specification sheet (PDF).

SlateGuard questions from roofers and homeowners

Will SlateGuard work on my slate roof?

Yes, provided the nail or screw holding each slate is reachable from below the course above. That covers natural slate, synthetic slate, composite tile, asphalt shingle, metal shingle and shake roofs. Interlocking metal panels are not a fit — use a SnoCleat, SnowCatcher or Deuce instead.

Can I screw a SlateGuard down instead of hooking it?

Yes. On new construction, fasten the strap into solid decking before the next course is laid. On asphalt shingles this is the preferred method, since short roofing nails do not give the hook much to grab.

How many SlateGuards do I need?

It depends on pitch, rafter length and your town's ground snow load. Send us the roof — we build the staggered spacing layout for free so you order the right count the first time.

What if my ground snow load is over 45 psf?

Individual guards are not rated for it. We fit the SnoBar and ColorBar rail systems with shingle and slate brackets for heavy-snow regions — ask for a bar quote.

Is the SlateGuard in stock in Canada?

SlateGuard is made to order. Typical lead time is 3 to 5 weeks, and colour orders can run longer. Call 437-475-2066 for the current schedule before you book the install.
